Navis licence
Navis is free and open source. You can use, study, share and change it under the GNU General Public License.
Last updated 18 October 2026
Navis is developed by Porthorion, an independent developer, and is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or (at your option) any later version (GPL-3.0-or-later). The source code is at github.com/Porthorion/Navis, and the full licence text is in its LICENSE file.
What the licence allows
This is a short summary, not a replacement for the licence. Where they differ, the licence text applies.
- Use Navis for any purpose, on as many devices as you like.
- Study and change the source code.
- Share copies of Navis, changed or unchanged.
If you distribute Navis or a version you changed, the GPL requires you to:
- make the complete source code of what you distribute available under the same licence;
- keep the copyright and licence notices, and mark your changes;
- not add restrictions that take away the rights the GPL gives everyone else.
The Navis name and logo
The GPL covers the code, not the name. The Navis name and logo are reserved for official builds from Porthorion. If you distribute a modified version, give it a different name and icon, so nobody mistakes it for an official build.
Official builds
Official builds are on the download page and on the GitHub releases page. Downloads from this site come from downloads.porthorion.com, and so do in-app updates unless you choose GitHub as the update source. The files attached to GitHub releases are identical copies, so you can check any copy against the release’s SHA-256 checksums. Every official Android build is signed with the key whose fingerprint is on the download page.
No warranty
Navis is free of charge and comes without any warranty, to the extent the law allows. See sections 15 and 16 of the GPL. Keep backups of your music and data.
Open-source components
Navis includes other open-source software, each under its own licence. The list is inside the app, in Settings > About > Open-Source Licenses. On Windows and Linux, audio playback uses libmpv and FFmpeg under the GNU Lesser General Public License; the credits page links their source code.
Your music and online services
Navis plays music from the server you choose, such as Navidrome or another Subsonic-compatible server. You are responsible for having the right to the music you use with it. Optional features connect to services such as LRCLIB, Last.fm, ListenBrainz, Deezer and internet radio stations. Those services belong to their owners, who are not affiliated with Navis, and have their own terms. The app privacy policy explains what each one receives.
